Three Really Big Deals (you may have missed)

Online video is now everywhere – mobile devices, over-the-top boxes (Roku, etc.), gaming systems and more. In fact, it’s become such a standard of everyday life that it may be hard to stay abreast of all the cool technology changes that have occurred in the past year or so. And it’s understandable – once broadcast TV became a household item, the technology essentially stood still for almost 40 years while we were obsessed with content: network shows, primetime, live newscasts, serials, stars – it’s no wonder the technology of the medium stagnated while we focused on the living room screen.

But the web is all about multitasking and parallel lines of development – so while we see more (and better!) content filling up our viewing time from sources we never imagined even five years ago (Netflix Originals, AMC, FX and a host of other new entries in the content space) – technology has continued to march forward on the background, even while this new parade of visual distractions keeps us focused on the now rather than the tomorrow.

Anyway, I spend a lot of time in this space – and I thought I ‘d take this opportunity to offer up my Top Three Technologies that you may have missed while watching Game of Thrones or Sons of Anarchy. Here’s the list (and why they’re important):

1) http://www.broadcastplay.com/ - At first you might say “what’s the big deal about THIS?”, but it’s really a game changer. Previously, the ability to manage large amounts of content in a real-time, scheduled environment was limited to Broadcast and Cable Facilities operating giant, expensive “playout” machines. Well, you may not have the content – but now everyone can be their own TV station complete with scheduling, commercial insertion, graphics overlay…all for around $400. Ok, while it’s true that no one might want to watch an endless channel of your home movies and cell phone clips – it feels good knowing you can do it! For those who don’t have the OTHER end of a broadcast facility lying around their backyard – there’s http://www.uniplay.tv/ who feature Unistreamer Lite for around $600 which allows you to create a 24 hour-a-day channel (like the Broadcastplay folks) AND sends that stream directly to YouTube Live or a myriad of other live streaming services. I can’t personally vouch for either of these products as I simply don’t have enough compelling video clips to put them through their  “24 hour” paces – but someday…

2) MPEG-DASH – Another geek-only term that will really change the streaming / online industry. Already embedded in many current streaming platforms, MPEG-DASH stands for Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP. What does this really mean? It means that the bandwidth / size / device / operating system nightmares that have plagued streaming video in the past are coming to an end. This open-source, player agnostic codec allows you to stream over HTTP – the same protocol as web pages while taking into account network issues – so your cell phone isn’t trying to play back a file encoded for HD playback on the big screen. This will make people’s lives a better place to be – and perhaps, one day in the distance future a small child will ask “Mommy, what’s buffering?” .

3) WebRTC – This is the killer technology you’ve never heard of, simply because many people just don’t know it’s there. WebRTC stands for Web (like internet, right?) Real-Time Communications – which essentially means that the video conferencing industry had better find something else to do. It seems Google bought a cool company that had a browser plug-in (think app for your browser) that allows browsers to talk to each other using VIDEO directly – without going through a bunch of encoding and de-coding and streaming servers and voodoo. And in their wisdom, Google just gave it away. They made it part of the Chrome browser environment so it works really well on PCs running Chrome and Android devices. It also works on some other lesser browsers but still hasn’t been adopted by Internet Explorer or Safari (even though the end product resembles Face-Time on an iPad) – BUT industry pundits say it’s only a matter of time.

So you can now run your own automated, 24-hour-a-day television station that doesn’t buffer while videochatting  directly with your friends through a chrome browser. Is the future a great place or what?

BroadbandVideo, Inc Invited by Lt. Governor Garcia to Event - Video Praised

We were recently chosen to produce a series of interview videos for a well-known, State-funded agency dealing with prison inmate recidivism. We're not mentioning the name of this agency in this description so as to not distract any Search Engine direction. It was a privilege to shoot and edit this series of interviews from men who have used State-provided tools to change the course of their lives, as well as the power of their own convictions.

These videos are featured prominently on a website that was recently handed multiple accolades by Colorado Lt. Governor Garcia in a press conference held at the State Capitol. We were privileged to be present for this presentation as the video series was mentioned several times in the Lt. Governor's talk and many of the former inmates who participated in this series were present at the event.

Live Awards Ceremony Video Streaming Event for BroadbandVideo.com / Warehouse38.tv

BroadbandVideo, Inc. dba Warehouse38.tv produced another large, live streaming webcast over the weekend worthy of note – this event was attended by over 2800 people (mostly schoolchildren) as part of a non-profit, educational contest. The location was challenging as was the operation of the system: a fully-switched two camera set-up running on the newly released LiveStream Studio. The basic setup was two HDMI cameras coming into the system via Blackmagic Internsity Pro cards, internal Livestream Studio switcher and external room condenser microphones. A single operator controlled the stream, switch & cameras to lower costs.

The event (which was close to three hours of continual streaming) went off without a hitch using Livestream.com as the streaming destination: over 500 concurrent users watched the free stream, many joined in the live chat service available via Livestream and thousands watched the archive in the following days. The event produced over 9 hours of usable footage – both camera feeds and the output mix were recorded as well as the Livestream.com archive.

Watch a portion of the event here:

If you or your company would like to explore the possibilities provided by streaming video events live, please contact BroadbandVideo.com or Warehouse 38.tv at 720-596-4856. Live streaming can be used for corporate communications, award ceremonies, special sporting events or any other function you can possibly image. By using a combination of cost-effective equipment, highly skilled personnel and free streaming services – costs can be kept to a minimum and results can prove to be spectacular!

The End of an Era – Analogue Webcasting System Bites the Dust at BroadbandVideo.com

In all fairness, we shot this a while ago – but those who are into this kind of thing might find this interesting: the demise of our initial analogue webcasting setup. We built this starting in 2008 as an experiment to see if we could create a multicam / interactive set-up without spending the kind of big dollars that Tricaster was commanding back in the pre-Wirecast days. It was a helluva system and it was a workhorse for many years.

Did it generate a lot of income? No, but it provided us with endless hours of broadcasting fun and experimentation as we learned what works and what doesn’t in the live webcasting space. We did manage to pick up an Emmy Award in 2009 (Heartland Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) – Advanced Media / General Multimedia category) with a weekly webcast produced on this very system. Initially we used Windows Media, but that became a stumbling block as FMLE became more common in the live space. Towards the end we hooked up a whole pile of encoders so we could go to all the live services out there simultaneously.

BUT – the only constant in this business is change – and we’ve moved to all digital platforms and continue to experiment in that space. Recently we constructed a complete Wirecast system from scratch and now we’re moving into an install mode with the new Livestream Studio. We’re going to be documenting this implementation pretty extensively as we re-group to begin the production of our latest weekly webcast coming to a PC, Mac & mobile device near you!

Number 3 on the Number 2 SEARCH ENGINE with Category Keywords in 2.5 hours

Well, our last blog entry was pretty incredible (see it here) where we describe how we were able to get to a number 2 position on YouTube with three simple keywords (one being location-based) in 48 hours, but this latest VSEO result is SO UNBELIEVABLE – well, you’ll just have to believe me and check out the screen shot. First, check out the video:

We posted a 60 second promotional video for a client the night before in a bit of a hurry – they wanted to get it linked up on their website, so the file was loaded to the client channel on YouTube with just a headline description: the name of the company. No description, no title massaging, NO KEYWORDS! So the next morning one of our team members did a “view source” on the site, pulled the meta-description from the homepage code, added a few missing items and posted that to the description of the video on YouTube.

Next, they took the keywords directly from the website and loaded those (again, with a slight bit of modification) and then re-wrote the headline to include some key phrases about the product. You know the rest: they hit “save” and moved on.

Now it would be one thing if their company was called “ZZZmickle, Inc” and they made “flerbers” or something nobody was searching on – but the fact is, the company is called “Managed Benefits, Inc.” and they specialize in, well, managed benefits in Denver. A pretty generic name in a pretty competitive industry. I decided to do a YouTube search on “managed benefits” just for a laugh to see how many billion videos YT returned – and there (much to my surprise) was our clients’ video in the NUMBER THREE SPOT (discounting the paid positions, of course). The keywords, description & title changes were made around 11am, you can see the time stamp on the screen freeze is 1:27pm – two and a half hours later!

And the really amazing part of this? The keywords I searched on were NOT localized – this was on a total search of YouTube. Oh, and for those of you who think number of views are more important than correct keywording  in terms of placement– check the number on the screen shot: 1 view. We’re sure due to the positioning and keywording on YouTube that THAT number is sure to change!

Number 2 on YouTube in 48 Hours FREE! Pretty Picture for Art Client from BroadbandVideo.com

So for the YouTube nay-sayers (generally folks who own hosting companies as I once did) and the Ad-Words advocates (don’t get me wrong, ad words can provide a lift) here’s one for the record books: A short, promotional video placed on YouTube rose to the #2 position on three short keywords in 48 hours completely organically. For those of you who are not familiar with the term “organic” in reference to SEO on the web –it means FREE. This is how this stuff is supposed to work!

There are places where you can buy clicks, “black hat” SEO farms (generally outside the US) and all sorts of tricky things you can do to get your video found – so it’s really nice when, without gaming the system, and playing by the rules – the good stuff happens. Here’s what we did: we had just finished production of a short video explaining about an iPad App for a client. The video talks about the app capabilities, but also talks about the core services of her business. She didn’t have a channel on YouTube, so I told her to go make one (which she did) and then I uploaded the new video for her so I could control the title, paragraph description (and links) and keywords.

I uploaded the video, did my best titling, seo-friendly paragraph writing AND played a bunch with the keywords (especially being aware of the local nature of her business). I hit “save” and stepped back. The next day I went and typed in the following keywords as a generic (non-logged in) search on the #2 Search Engine in the world (YouTube): “lease art denver” – which I figured would be what people would be searching for considering she leases art in Denver. The video came in at the NUMBER TWO organic position. Normally, getting this kind of rank on YouTube would take all kinds of work – but this result was in 48 hours (less actually) and was 100% free for my client.

I’m going to try other keyword combinations, and then move on to Google itself and see when (or if) this same phenomena happens on the #1 Search Engine – but until then, it’s good to know that when you play the game right, good things can happen for SMBs without spending a lot of money.

YouTubeVideoDenver.com is owned by BroadbandVideo.com – we produce cost effective videos to help your business get found on YouTube and Google. Forbes Gets It – Online Video Essential For Business!

For years I’ve been singing the gospel of “educational “ or instructional video around SMB marketing – and now Forbes has joined in the chorus. What I’ve been talking about, of course, is the use of content marketing as opposed to straight advertising. If you create content about your product / service and how it fits in with your viewer’s daily life / interests / hobbies – they’re far more likely to view your company as a trusted source of information than if you simply bombard them with coupons and specials. Clearly, this is the age of content marketing. At one point simply creating a 2-3 minute commercial for your business put you way ahead of the pack, but those days are behind us now. Content marketing demands you embrace an ongoing strategy of information creation that serves several purposes: creates the “trusted information source” image, helps drive SEO with enhanced visibility (especially on YouTube) and creates the potential for the viral / social sharing of information about your business. Not sold on video? When was the last time somebody passed you a whitepaper on Twitter or Facebook? Now think about the same scenario with video – I’ve been sent car commercials, beer commercials and a mountain of other subjects with the comment “Watch This!”, and if I know the person who sent it – I generally do.

I’ve even gone so far as to name this process (with tongue planted firmly in cheek) “The Circle of Internet Video Life” – here’s the video: http://youtu.be/kxhp4BdP9IA

So, in 2013 Forbes officially joins the group that sings the praises of online video content marketing here: http://www.forbes.com/sites/seanrosensteel/2013/01/28/why-online-video-is-vital-for-your-2013-content-marketing-objectives/?goback=%2Egde_146070_member_209280535 – of course, as with any online “expert”, the author of this piece is actually engaging in some rather clearly defined content marketing – as his service is one of the solutions he recommends. My only question is this – while I like reading articles as much as the next guy: where’s his video?

BroadbandVideo.com YouTube Video Production for Business - Three Types of Video

In an effort to help small and medium business owners capitalize on the popularity of video on YouTube - we recently produced this video to explain the three types of video we produce at BroadbandVideo.com in our facility in Denver / Littleton, Colorado. The first is a "video montage" - which is a video that we create using voice over, music, stills and other multimedia elements to explain the benefits of your business. The second is a "location shoot" where we come to your place of business and actually shoot video of you (or whomever you'd like) talking about your business and / or products. The third is a "studio shoot" where you come to our 3000 square foot production facility in Littleton, Colorado and we use our green screen to make you look great! Here's a video that shows examples of all these formats:

What Did I Do To Deserve Windows 8?

For those of you reading this who don’t know me – I’m a techno-creative who’s been working in digital even before there WAS a digital. And throughout that rather extensive time period, I’ve done something that many other creatives could not understand: I swore my allegiance to the Microsoft Operating System.

I’ve heard the whines and the complaints, I’ve endured the file format debacles (“Oh, we just assumed you’d be using a Mac for Art Direction”) and I’ve even dabbled for a couple of years on the dark side…but it always came back to two things: Windows OS (and Windows Hardware overall) were cheaper and essentially did the exact same thing. And after many, many years of troubleshooting Windows – well, I’m pretty good at it. I’ve gone from Windows 95 (uh-huh) all the way up to Windows 7 Ultimate – and considering there are about 18 systems here at the shop – I work in EVERYTHING in-between. I use Vista 64 for webcasting (nice and stable!) and Ultimate 7 for HD video editing. My HD editing box has never once crashed in over two years of daily usage.

So, I get a call from a good friend of mine who we’ll call “Skip” (because that’s his name) and he explains that he just got a Dell Laptop for his wife and he’s having issues getting it to work correctly – Skip is a Mac guy and his wife generally works in Windows. Skip bribes me with lunch and brings his laptop over to the studio: this is my first “hands on” encounter with Windows 8 outside of the shelves at Best Buy or Office Max. I figure “how much different can this be?” – I mean, I’m somewhat of a Windows expert, so I’m pretty sure I can fix whatever is ailing my friend’s laptop. Wrong, Bucko, welcome to Windows 8.

Tiles – who came up with this and why do I need them? I’d don’t use my production machines to Facebook, tweet, check the weather or view random images of life on Mars, but for some unknown reason, my normal, placid (low CPU usage) desktop is flipping and flopping out “tiles” of information like some meth-smoking, sex-monkey on a search engine overload. I’m getting sports scores, stock reports, groupon deals and all sorts of other crap thrown in my face – PLEASE, make it stop! Finally I discover that one of the tiles is marked “desktop” and I click on that. Peace, quiet and digital calm ensue…I’m not being bombarded by tile insanity anymore – now we can get busy.

Let’s see what programs are on this machine – I’ll just go to the Start menu and see what we’ve got. Wrong, no start menu.  I can, however, fling my cursor up into the left hand corner of the screen and that seems to pull up every website ever created in the last 20 years, the same action on the lower right indicates that I might soon end up back at the “tiles” screen (oh no!) upper right does something but I’m not sure what and somewhere along the right hand side a bunch of goofy icons show up that I don’t need “Search, Tab, Call for Laundry Service and Make Me A Sandwich” (as far as I can tell) – so I settle on “Search”. That takes you to a page that is a huge listing of programs (good) and a bunch of things called “apps”.  Now, I understand the need for apps on a iPhone, Droid or even a tablet – but what do I need an app on a laptop for?

Microsoft has provided us with two convoluted routes to the same thing: I can view eBay (or any other web-based service) as either a fully-functional site in a browser or as a dumbed-down, half-functional “basterd” version called an app. Say, this is progress! Not only that – but even venerable Internet Explorer has two versions: the old “program style” (with the URL bar at the top) and the “app” version (with the URL version at the bottom). So, just to get this straight – you can now view websites from within a browser app, or a regular browser or you can just use the app. Now, the problem that we’re having with this particular laptop is that it accesses the internet just fine from the IE App version, but the standard IE Program says “Page not found” no matter what we point it to. We’ve got fast and huge connectivity, so that’s not the problem – there seems to be something going on between the App version and the Program version. I’m sure a call to the friendly Dell helpline will solve this problem.

Now, I couldn’t make this stuff up – we spent four and a half hours (really) on the phone to Dell support. We started off in customer care – where we told the tech all our information (12 digit computer service number, full name, company that purchased the unit, office phone, backup phone and email address) and described the problem. In VERY broken English he apologized for the problem we were having and said he would transport us to tech support. This took 25 minutes on hold where (you guessed it) we provided all our information again (12 digit computer service number, full name, company that purchased the unit, office phone, backup phone and email address) to the “hardware tech”. He also had issues with English as he was clearly speaking to us from a call center in India (the background noise coupled with his thick accent made conversation a grinding process) – he explained that he would “take control” of our system and fix the problem. All we had to do was download a file, install it and we would be on our way. We tried this 3 times – and each time received the same error message. Why? Because our web browser was screwed up – but regardless, each of the three attempts took us across many screens that all required numbers and letters to be entered. Not an issue if our guide spoke English, but far more challenging considering this exchange: “Hoaky, to be entering  the code B then the code C then the number two”, “B as in boy?”, “No, B as in tango”, “You mean T?”, “That’s what I said – B”.

I won’t bore you with the remaining 3 hours – but suffice it to say, we went from Customer Service, to Hardware Support to Software Support to some black hole of tech support hell where they only speak in grunts and monotone whistles and throw small chips of flint through the receiver. We finally got the system so that whatever you clicked on, you got the “app” version of IE (which worked) and it just hid the non-functional program version of IE somewhere in the bowels of the operating system never to be seen or heard from again. I gave in to Tech Support overload and had to call it a day – I meekly asked Skip if it was too late to plop this piece of crap back in the box and return it to from whence it came – and he told me that “Window of opportunity” was closed – the box was his.

I took this experience to heart and began to think about my own future with Windows 8 – I began to have fantasies of stockpiling used Windows 7 laptops purchased on Craigslist that I could wear out over time without ever having to deal with tiles, apps or icons that looked like they represented changing a carburetor in a ‘53 Mercury. I’m now more careful with my hand gestures as a rule for fear that collections of past websites or programs or whatever will suddenly appear sweeping out of the corners of my peripheral vision to corrupt my normal, stable existence. I have “Fear of 8”!

Postscript: Two days later I was walking thought a local mall and there was a Dell Kiosk. I asked the gents working there if my friend could bring his Dell to them and have them take a look at his problems. They informed me that I should call tech support – I told them that there were many and varied communication barriers in that process that made speaking to tech support damn near impossible. They laughed, agreed and said “Here’s what you gotta do – when asked to pick YOUR language, pick Spanish. That way you get routed to a call center in Texas where they all speak English anyway. If you pick English, they just send you to India”. Or, I could just purchase future laptops from Microcenter, where if it doesn’t work, you put the thing back in the box and say (in whatever language you’d like) “Give me a new one!”

Low Cost Alternative to Tricaster - BroadbandVideo's VideoBox Part 5

While there are a lot of very expensive options in the digital "studio-in-a-box" world (Tricaster and others) - I thought it would be cool to create a box with all the high-end functions of these products, but at a much lower cost. Now there's a trade off of time and frustration, and that's what this video series is all about. We're going to build VideoBox - which is a PC based, digital switcher / webcaster with multiple HD cameras & full LIVE green screen capability. This is our series for uber tech-geeks only on how to emulate the functionality of the Tricaster for a fraction of the cost. We're using Wirecast Pro as the software - so the rest is all hardware, cameras, lighting, green screen & overlays. Join us as we get down and technical in the live video webcasting space. Visit our website at www.broadbandvideo.com to find out more about online video, live streaming, webcasting and video on demand in the Denver area.

In this episode, we get VideoBox hooked up with two monitors, get our JVC GR-HD1 Video Camera to feed into the Blackmagic Intensity Pro cards AND get our first view at exactly how cool live virtual / digital sets using Wirecast REALLY look.

Altitude TV / KSE Chooses BroadbandVideo, Inc. for Live Stream to NBA.com

BroadbandVideo, Inc. was honored to be chosen by Altitude TV / KSE to stream live one of the most recent press conferences / media events held at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. While the Nuggets Coach, George Carl, was taking questions from the media - the BroadbandVideo, Inc. encoding system was sending out HDMI-based streams across the Akamai CDN to the Denver Nuggets Basketball Team's official site on NBA.com. But during this momentous occasion it wasn't the sage wisdom of the coach or the lively banter of the players that held the world's attention thanks to the rock-solid webcast provided by BroadbandVideo, Inc. - it was, in fact, the announcement of the NEW Denver Nuggets Uniforms that received the lion's share of attention from the countless online video views across the globe.

The webcast went off without a hitch or a hiccup - thanks to the high-quality feed from the seasoned broadcasting veterans at Altitude TV and the new-media prowess of Denver's longest-running webcaster, BroadbandVideo, Inc. If you or your company could benefit from Live Webcasting, Video On Demand, YouTube Video Creation or any other online video or video streaming services - call 720-596-4856 or visit www.BroadbandVideo.com TODAY for more information.

BroadbandVideo.com Launches New Website – visit www.BroadbandVideo.com Today!

While websites come and go with great frequency – BroadbandVideo, Inc. has been at the forefront of new media / online video in the Denver area since 2001. It’s with great pride and pleasure (and a fairly large sigh of relief) that we announce the new site available at www.BroadbandVideo.com – replacing our longstanding, venerable site that has been live for over 11 years in the same basic form.

It’s a tribute to the original designers & coders that the site has been serviceable for so long – but with new business objectives and new site expectations, it was time to start from scratch and move forward. So, what’s new at BroadbandVideo.com?

Core Business Re-Focus:

In an ever-changing digital environment – adaptation is the key to survival. And that’s just what we’ve done at Broadband Video, Inc. – we’ve changed to serve you better and to focus on core competencies and client needs. While we’ll still be offering our highly-sustainable core “encode & host” services to our current and legacy clients, there are essentially three new disciplines that will define the company moving forward. They are:

YouTube Video & Channel Creation - Well-placed video not only attracts customers and increases sales, but it also helps YOUR business get “found” by Google and other search engines. The more your video is found by search engines – the easier your potential customers can find you! Many traditional (and some non-traditional) businesses are now using online video to attract new customers. In order to compete in the ever-crowding internet space – you need to be able to provide your customers with video that they can view on YouTube and Facebook. BroadbandVideo.com has the expertise, the people, the equipment and the pricing to get your business video on YouTube TODAY! There are basically three production scenarios for video - “Video Montage”, “Location Video” and “Green Screen”. Please check out our samples at http://www.broadbandvideo.com/youtube.htm to decide which service is best for your business.

Live Studio & Location Streaming - BroadbandVideo, Inc has been a pioneer in the live streaming space all the way back to 1997 with a one-frame-per-second webcast of Geraldo Rivera for America Online (AOL) from the studios of Digital City Denver. And now we've got an 3000 square foot studio in the heart of old downtown Littleton, Colorado with three stages devoted to LIVE streaming video. We can stream live to any public service you'd like: Ustream, LiveStream, Veetle, Ubroadcast, FreedoCast (just to name a few) or directly into social media sites like FaceBook or YouTube Live. OR we can stream live to ALL OF THEM at the same time. Of course, we can stream directly to private services also – perfect for your corporate Town Hall or CEO Round-Table. Plug a chat window or live Skype into the webcast and you've got a full multimedia event of global proportions.

Wordpress Website Development - The technologies behind website development have changed significantly over the years – from “hand-coding in notepad” to Frontpage to .ASP – but now the venerable website has come full circle: Wordpress allows anyone to contribute, publish and ultimately retain control of their web presence. We can help you with set-up, design, core content and more – and then either hand the site off to your business or remain in as much of a service capacity as you wish. If Wordpress is not the direction you'd like to go – we're highly experienced in most codebases and languages used on the web. We can build your entire site – or just help you update or fix areas of special concern.

YouTube video, Live Streaming & Wordpress websites clearly and cleanly define our core competencies and will enable BroadbandVideo, Inc. to move forward into the years ahead with products and services that benefit small and large businesses alike. Low Cost Alternative to Tricaster - BroadbandVideo's VideoBox Part 2

This is the first in our series for uber tech-geeks only on how to emulate the functionality of the Tricaster for a fraction of the cost.

In this episode we install one of our three Blackmagic Intensity Pro HDMI capture boards, finish with our "applecharger.sys" problem and generally move things along in the creation of our streaming video "station-in-a-box"!

In this first installment - we deal with combo USB 2.0 & Firewire Cards and come face-to-face with the dreaded Blue Screen of Death as our system searches for some unknown drivers and something called "applecharger.sys"!
